FITTSTOWN-Services for Bruce Gordon Stewart, 59, Fittstown, are 10:00 a.m. Saturday at the Fletcher Auditorium on the Murray State College campus in Tishomingo, Revs. David Daniel and Don Venable will officiate. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery in Ada.
Mr. Stewart died Tuesday, November 1, 2011 at a Tishomingo hospital. He was born July 21, 1952 at Scott Air Force Base, Illinois to Gerald Don and Georgia Jewel McElroy Stewart. Mr. Stewart received his B.S.Ed. in Biology at East Central in Ada, his Masters of Science in Biology at Northeast Louisiana State University in Monroe, and conducted graduate work at OU and Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge.
In 1983, after several years as an environmental consultant, Mr. Stewart went to Murray State College. Mr. Stewart taught at Murray State College for almost 30 years, starting out as an Instructor of Biological Sciences in 1983. He was later named as Professor of Biological Sciences in 2005. Over the years he also served as the head of the Science Department, most recently as Chair of the Department of Science and Mathematics since 2008. Through the years, Mr. Stewart also lent his scientific mind and teaching skill to other schools, teaching field courses at the OU Biological Station, East Central, the Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Morelos in Cuernavaca (Mexico), and at the Universidad de Leon (Nicaragua).
Over the years, Mr. Stewart received several honors and awards. Among those include the National Conservation Award from the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution in 1993, the Global Education Faculty Award in 2007, and the 2011 Robert L. Packard Outstanding Educator Award of the Southwestern Association of Naturalists (SWAN).
Most recently, Mr. Stewart was instrumental in the College being awarded a nearly 2-million dollar grant to help improve and build the Science and Mathematics Department. He was very excited about the grant, saying it was the most important thing to happen to science at MSC since the College opened its doors.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Ada, a member of the Tishomingo Lion’s Club and Narcotic’s Anonymous. He was an avid bird watcher and wildlife biologist.
Survivors include two sons, Scott Stewart and his wife Chandra Stewart of Edmond, and Quinn Stewart of the home; two granddaughters, Alex Funderburgh and Addison Stewart, both of Edmond; and his mother, Georgia Stewart of Fittstown; and his fiancé, Holly Gaines of Wilson.
He was preceded in death by his father, Gerald Don Stewart and brother, Brent Dewayne Stewart.
Bearers will be Jimmy Parrish, Danny Parrish, Trey McElroy, Eddie McElroy, Eric Harden, and Dwight Moore. Honorary bearer will be Jess Green.
